Species Overview:
Drosera spathulata is a compact, rosette-forming sundew native to parts of Asia and Australasia. The cultivar 'Rooi Ster' (Afrikaans for “Red Star”) is named for its deep reddish-pink coloration and neat, star-like shape. It’s small, hardy, and perfect for windowsills, terrariums, or bog setups, with a glistening carpet of tentacles that traps tiny insects with ease.
General Care:
-
Light: Needs bright light to full sun to bring out its red coloration and compact form. Indoors, a bright windowsill or grow light works well.
-
Water: Keep soil consistently moist using rain, distilled, or RO water. Use the tray method with 1–2 cm of standing water.
-
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity, especially in enclosed spaces, but adapts well to household conditions with consistent moisture.
-
Fertilizer: Doesn’t require fertilizer if it catches insects. You can feed it a tiny insect every few weeks or apply a weak foliar feed monthly if kept indoors.
-
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. If needed, treat gently with insecticidal soap or neem oil for aphids or mites.
