Title: Sarracenia leucophylla 'Red Top' – The Crimson-Crowned Pitcher Plant
Species Overview:
Native to the southeastern United States, Sarracenia leucophylla is one of the most spectacular North American pitcher plants. The 'Red Top' variant is prized for its tall, elegant traps with brilliant white lids and a deep crimson flush near the top. These pitchers form in flushes, particularly in autumn, and are excellent at catching flying insects like wasps and flies.
General Care:
-
Light: Requires full sun to thrive—at least 6 hours of direct sun daily. Strong light encourages vibrant coloration and healthy pitcher growth.
-
Water: Use rain, distilled, or reverse osmosis water only. Keep the plant sitting in 2–5cm of water during the growing season. Never allow it to dry out.
-
Dormancy: Requires a winter dormancy period (3–4 months of cool, shorter days). Reduce watering and keep cool but not frozen. Remove old pitchers.
-
Fertilizer: No feeding necessary—captures plenty of insects on its own. Avoid artificial fertilizer in the soil.
-
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but keep an eye out for aphids or scale insects. If needed, apply insecticidal soap early in the season.
