Species Overview:
Utricularia alpina is a stunning and unusual terrestrial/epiphytic bladderwort native to the tropical highlands of the Caribbean and northern South America. Unlike many Utricularia species, it produces thick, leathery leaves and large, orchid-like flowers in shades of white, lavender, or pink. It grows best in mossy, airy conditions—often mounted or potted in live sphagnum moss, where its underground bladders trap tiny prey like protozoa and nematodes.

General Care:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun. Too much direct sunlight may damage foliage.

  • Water: Keep constantly moist using only rain, distilled, or RO water. If planted in live sphagnum, ensure moss remains damp but not soggy.

  • Humidity: Loves high humidity (70%+). Thrives in terrariums or covered environments.

  • Fertilizer: Doesn’t need feeding if kept in living sphagnum and humid conditions. Insect prey is captured via underground bladders. If needed, occasional foliar feeding with very diluted orchid fertilizer can be used.

  • Pest Control: Very few pests; avoid harsh chemicals. Grows best in clean, enclosed setups where pests rarely occur.
