Nepenthes 'Mr Smee' – A Bold and Unusual Hybrid
Species Overview:
Nepenthes 'Mr Smee' is a striking hybrid, combining the robust nature of N. spathulata with the exotic traits of N. lowii and N. boschiana. The result is a vigorous plant with flared peristomes, colorful pitcher bodies, and a bold, sculptural look. This hybrid tends to have upright growth and a strong tolerance for intermediate conditions, making it both impressive and relatively easy to grow.
General Care:
-
Light: Bright, filtered light or dappled sun. Morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal. Strong light brings out vivid coloration in the pitchers.
-
Water: Keep the growing medium moist but not soggy. Use only rainwater, distilled, or RO water. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.
-
Humidity: Prefers high humidity (60–80%) but can tolerate slightly lower levels if well acclimated.
-
Temperature: Thrives in intermediate conditions (day: 22–28°C, night: 15–20°C). Avoid temperature extremes.
-
Fertilizer: Feed once a month with a very diluted orchid or carnivorous plant fertilizer (¼ strength) directly into pitchers or as a foliar spray.
-
Pest Control: Check occasionally for mealybugs, scale, or spider mites. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed—test first on a small area.
